Asset Management: Recognizing the Value of Hospice Staff Selection and Support

Deborah C. Hoffpauir

The approach and values of hospice dictate the selection of an individual worker based not only on the ability to perform within the structure of the interdisciplinary team but also based upon personal values that are closely aligned to the values that form the essence of hospice care. These values differentiate hospice care from other methods of caring for terminally ill patients and their family members. In recognizing the initial and ongoing investment of resources in recruiting and retaining the "right" hospice employee, the savvy hospice administrator manages what is, perhaps, his or her most costly asset with the same attention given to the more tangible assets of business.

Key Words: orientation • recruitment • replacement, selection • stress • support
