The Use of Physical Therapist Assistants in Home Health Care Agencies in New York

The shortage of physical therapists in home care has led many agencies to consider the ramifications of employing physical therapist assistants (PTAs) to provide services. However, regulations governing the use of PTAs in home care vary widely from state to state, and little research exists to document utilization patterns within the industry. This article examines PTA utilization patterns in a random sample of New York home health care agencies 1 year after amendment of the state education law to allow PTAs to work in the home without continuous on-site supervision.
