Healthy Beginnings Plus: An innovative approach to prenatal careHealthy Beginnings Plus Care Coordinator Lancaster General Hospital Family Health Clinic Lancaster, Pennsylvania This article describes an innovative prenatal program developed by the Pennsylvania Depart ment of Public Welfare. The program, Healthy Beginnings Plus, offers an array of educational and counseling services to pregnant women in an effort to improve birth outcomes. The feature element of Healthy Beginnings Plus is the care coordinator, who provides the client with health promotion teaching, home assessments/visitation, and a variety of counseling services. The ar ticle describes the operation of the Healthy Beginnings Plus Program at the Lancaster General Hospital Family Health Service. It further suggests that this full service program may be a cre ative, cost-saving model that other states could replicate to help improve infant outcomes.
