Antibiotic therapy in the elderly

Although infections in the elderly are very serious and can lead to dire consequences, close atten tion by the home health care provider will aid in detection and diagnosis of the problem. Careful selection of the antibiotic and dose is critical, as well as screening for potential drug interactions. This article offers some general guidelines regarding infectious diseases and antibiotic prescribing in the elderly which can help assure a positive therapeutic outcome.
