Understanding the basics of intraspinal infusions

Barbara St Marie, PHN, CRNI, MA

Pain Management Department of Anesthesiology North Memorial Medical Center Minneapolis, Minnesota

How and why is intraspinal infusion a more effective way to treat intractable pain? In this article, the anatomy of the vertebrae, the path of needle insertion in the spinal canal, the contents of the spinal canal, the dermatome pathways, the autonomic nervous system, and the anatomy of the spinal cord are all reviewed. The article explains how this procedure makes the patient more comfortable, with less medication and fewer side effects, and thus improves the quality of life.
