The challenge of gaining access to the mental health care system: One nurse's perspective

Anita Guarini, RN

Department of Nursing Holy Redeemer and Nazareth Home Health Services Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Home health care professionals and paraprofessionals are often faced with the dilemma of caring for a mentally ill patient who may or may not be capable of living alone. This article is a case study of one such situation and how the nurse, through her persistence, was able to get the patient treatment for the mental illness. A procedure for gaining access to the mental health system is also discussed. Being aware of potential problems may prevent such sad and frustrating situations. Knowing where to turn ahead of time will get the patient the necessary help sooner.
