Hazardous Agents in the Home

Anna N. Vioral, MSN, RN, OCN

Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Occupational exposure to hazardous drugs can occur when safe handling measures fail or when they are not used. Exposure may occur during drug preparation, transport, or administration; during the disposal process; when handling patient excreta; and in the event of spills. Recommendations for safe handling have been established for more than 20 years; however, twenty-first-century health care has complicated safe handling as many of these agents are now administered in diverse populations and settings. This article highlights current issues related to handling hazardous drugs as well as recommendation to minimize exposure.

Key Words: hazardous agents • safe handling • precautions • exposure • toxicities
