This article describes unique partnerships between South Dakota communities and the University of South Dakota that have been established for the purpose of assuring that nursing education opportunities are provided to individuals who are tied to the land. This includes those individuals who cannot uproot their families and move to Vermillion, the home of the University of South Dakota. As a result of these partnerships, there are hundreds of nurses throughout this state practicing nursing rather than dreaming of being a nurse. These registered nurses are providing quality nursing care within the very community that supports the educational efforts, and in turn this approach is addressing the nursing shortage.

Key Words: community • partnerships • nontraditional • nursing • education • service • flexible • access
