Advanced Practice Nursing in Home Health

Krista B. Tull, MS, RN

Ruth M. Carroll, PhD, APRN, PMH

Department of Nursing, Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland

Advanced practice nurses play an important role in the delivery of home health care. They possess the advanced knowledge and skills to improve the quality of care given to clients. The increasingly complex needs of those receiving home health services today make access to these providers imperative. Many clients may not have this clinical expertise readily available to them because of the relatively small number of certified home health advanced practice nurses. Programs in home health graduate education prepare nurses for this very much needed advanced practice role.

Key Words: advanced practice nurse • home health care • graduate nursing education • advanced practice certification • complex care
