Recognizing Menopausal Symptomatology

Pamela Buxton-Blake, DNSC

Menopause is a physiological midlife transition for most women. However, many women experience uncomfortable menopausal symptomatology. During this transitional period, some women seek assistance for menopausal concerns from health care providers. Primary care is an important channel for educating and disseminating menopause information. Home health care nurses are in a pivotal position to offer guidance and provide whole person care, where all treatment and treatment goals are consistent with expressed needs, values, faith, and priorities. This article provides an overview of perimenopause and the resultant symptomatology, which are of increasing interest to health care providers.

Key Words: menopause • menopause symptoms • alternative therapies
