Understanding the Cultural Self in Promoting Culturally Competent Care in the CommunityDuquesne University School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA; Transcultural Nursing Society The purpose of this article is to assist nurses and other health care professionals in understanding their own culture and their perceptions of racism and prejudice as the beginning step in delivering and promoting culturally congruent nursing care. Through the process of understanding the cultural self, nurses and other health care professionals can begin to understand the cultural other. Through this process, nurses and other health care professionals can promote the cultural health and well-being of those they serve through health care.
