Methods for Recruiting and Evaluating Job Candidates

David A. Shiplacoff

Selecting competent and compatible management employees depends on the identification and evaluation of suitable candidates. This article provides practical advice for advertising, networking, and using search firms to enable an employer to reach a large pool of suitable prospective candidates. The merits of a written position description, which provides an objective document defining the person and position to be filled, a checklist of qualifications to use as a framework for interviewing candidates, and a time-saving handout to give to interested prospects, are discussed. Effective candidate evaluation methods are discussed, with practical pointers for screening resumes, conducting telephone and personal interviews, and checking references.
